Corporate Social Responsibility and ESG: Support for Highly Vulnerable Sectors in Panama

Alfaro, Ferrer & Ramirez | Providing legal services

As part of its sustainability and social responsibility strategy, the firm, through its initiative AFRA ESG, recently executed a direct support campaign for the Hogar San José of the Missionaries of Charity.

This initiative, coordinated by the Social Aid Committee, focused on mitigating basic shortages in health and hygiene supplies (infant formula and diapers) for vulnerable populations.

Targeting of Social Assistance

The selection of the Hogar San José of the Missionaries of Charity as a beneficiary responds to an analysis of critical needs in the local community. This institution, founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, serves a highly complex demographic profile: people in situations of abandonment, mostly children and adults with severe disabilities, including clinical conditions of cerebral palsy.

AFRA's intervention seeks to provide essential resources that guarantee the daily operations of care centers that often operate with limited resources in the face of high care demand.

The «Social» Component in the ESG Strategy

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has evolved toward measurable ESG criteria. AFRA's action is not isolated, but rather responds to the component Social of its AFRA ESG initiative, strengthening the link between the private sector and public welfare institutions.

The active participation of employees in the collection of supplies fosters an internal culture of corporate citizenship, aligning the values of the human team with the urgent needs of the Panamanian social environment.

Implications for Social Cohesion

The role of the private sector is essential to complement the work of NGOs and the State in caring for vulnerable groups.

  • Direct Impact: The donation of essential supplies has an immediate effect on the quality of life and dignity of resident patients.
  • Institutional Sustainability: Corporate support allows institutions like the Hogar San José to redirect their operational funds toward other critical areas such as specialized medical care or infrastructure.
